Spinifex Country

Spinifex Country is a region in the Great Victorian Desert in Western Australia. It extends all the way to the Nullarbor Plain, that vast area of sandhills and mulga bush where not a single tree (nulla arbor!) is to be seen.

The people living here belong to the Pitjantjatjara language group and are probably the last remaining nomads of the Australian Deserts.

It is exactly this untouched primitiveness that triggers the particular fascination with Spinifex Art, which can truly be called the ˈarchetypeˈ of Aboriginal Art.
